Eid prayer
Muslims gather to perform Eid Salaah globally on the day of Eid. Eid Salah is an important aspect of Eidain. There are two sets of Rakat in Eid Salah. Furthermore, the time for Eid prayer starts 15 minutes after sunrise, till 15 minutes before Zawal when the sun is right on the top of your head. Moreover, it is a sunnah to perform Eid Salaah in the congregation (Jamaat), under the guidance of an Imaam. It is mandatory For men to perform Eid prayer in the mosque in the congregation. And For women, it is not obligatory to pray in the mosque. But, they can pray Eid Salah in the mosque too, if they observe proper Hijaab and follow the rules of the mosque
Eid Prayer in Quran
Allah has promised rewards in exchange for every good deed or any worship mankind does in His Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la's name, such as Eid. One of the References for Eid Reward from The Holy Quran is mentioned below
Surah Baqrah Ayat#185
During the month of Ramadan the Qur'an was sent down as a guide to the people with Clear Signs of true guidance and as the Criterion (between right and wrong). So those of you who live to see that month should fast it, and whoever is sick or on a journey should fast the same number of other days instead. Allah wants ease and not hardship for you so that you may complete the number of days required,186 magnify Allah for what He has guided you to and give thanks to Him.187
Eid Prayer in Hadith
A number of references are given in Hadith for the Eidain. Some of them are as follows:
Narrated Anas bin Malik Bukhari hadith#73
Allah's Apostle never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of Eid-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates.
Narrated Al-Bara Bukhari Hadith#71
I heard the Prophet (P.B.U.H) delivering a Khutba saying, "The first thing to be done on this day (first day of Eid ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions)."
Narrated Al-Bara Bukhari Hadith#82
The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, "The first thing that we should do on this day of ours is to pray and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. So anyone who does so, he acted according to our Sunna (tradition), and whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, it was just meat which he presented to his family and would not be considered as Nusuk." A person from the Ansar named Abu Burda bin Niyyar said, "O Allah's Apostle! I slaughtered the Nusuk (before the prayer) but I have a young she-goat which is better than an older sheep." The Prophet I said, "Sacrifice it in lieu of the first, but it will be not sufficient (as a sacrifice) for anybody else after you."
Steps to Perform Eid ul Fitr Prayer
In order to fulfill the purpose of Eid Prayers, we must complete all the important elements of Salah. For that, adequate knowledge about religion is necessary. But, always remember to follow the Imaam and perform every step after him. Always be attentive and focus on what he is reciting and repeat after him. Below are the authentic steps to guide you on How to Perform Eid Prayer!
Step 1 Prepare for Eid ul Fitr Prayer
Eid is the most important festivity of Islam. Muslims got these Eidain as a reward from Allah Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la for their Faith and Ibadah. Muslims prepare themselves on the Day Of Eid in a special way. But the question remains on how to perform the eid prayer. Moreover, Eid salah needs some special and basic preparation before Salah such as,
- One must rise up early in the morning.
- Take a bath and wear the finest clothes you have (wear new ones if you can afford them).
- Spray some scent and comb your hair.
- Eat an odd number of dates or anything sweet before leaving for Salah ( To follow the Sunnah).
- Pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr before namaz, so that the poor can feed on Eid Day.
- Leave for Eid salah reciting the Taqbeer "Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ill'Allah Wallahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillah-il-Hamd"
Step 2Make An Intention
Your mind must focus on the intention you say at the beginning of Salah. As Allah Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la rewards you accordingly for the intensity and truthfulness of your intention. Make an intention in a low voice saying "I intend to offer two Rakat Eid Salah in the name of Allah" and follow your Imaam.
Step 3 Say Takbeer
When the Imaam says الله أكبر, raise your hands and say الله أكبر in a low voice. Next, recite سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك i.e. Dua-al-Istiftah. After that, the Imaam will say the Takbeer three times, follow and repeat after him. Raise your hands for Takbeer, whenever the Imaam saysالله أكبر, and then place them back on your sides.
Step 4 Perform Qayam
After the three Taka'beer have been recited place your right hand on the top of your left hand. The Imaam will recite Surah Fatiha followed by another Surah in the first Rakat. Focus on his recitation and repeat after him.
Step 5 Perform Ruku
Once the Imaam is done reciting the Quran, you will hear the Imaam say, الله أكبر. Repeat after him and bow down placing your hands on the knees, eyes focused on the ground and back parallel to the ground. Then recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِي three times one after another. When you hear the Imaam say سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ, stand back straight and recite رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ in a low voice.
Step 6 Perform First Sajdah
When you hear the Imaam say next Takbeer i.e. الله أكبر go into prostration. While saying الله أكبر bend your knees and touch your forehead to the ground and say سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى three times.
Step 7Perform Jalsa
Next, while reciting الله أكبر, raise your head from the ground, and remain seated with your knees bent for a few seconds before performing the second sajda.
Step 8Perform Second Sajdah
Again reciting الله أكبر, touch your forehead to the ground to prostrate again into the second sajda of your first Rakat. Recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى three times.
Step 9Stand up to Perform Second Rakat
Then, again say الله أكبر and stand up, place your hands on your navel/chest with your right hand over your left hand. And, repeat recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha and other Surah, Then perform Ruku and perform Prostration two times (as mentioned above) to complete your second Sajda.
Step 10Perform Quood
Reciting الله أكبر rise from the final sajda of the second Rakat, but remain seated on the ground, back straight up with your knees bend. Place the palm of your hands on the knees and recite Tash'hud. After completing Tash'hud, recite Durood as you usually send Salawat Upon The Prophet (P.B.U.H) during the normal Salah. Now, right after completion of Durood, recite Rabbi Ja'alni and close your second Rakat.
Step 11Perform Tasleem
Once you have finished the Dua (Rabbi Ja'alni) turn your face to the right and say اَلسَلامُ عَلَيْكُم وَرَحْمَةُ اَللهِ then repeat the same step for the left side behind your Imaam. This means you have completed your Eid Salah.
Step 12Attend Khutba
Right after Salam you must remain seated and wait for the Imaam to start the Khutbah. Khutba is an obligation, which means it is rude to leave during Khutba and one must listen to it. It addresses different Islamic issues and lasts for 10-30 minutes. Speaking during Khutba has been discouraged by the scholars as it seems disrespectful.
Wait for the Imaam to finish the Khutba, then raise your hands to make dua. Start with the beautiful names of Allah Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la and praise him as much as you can. Then send Salawat over Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Always make dua with complete faith in Allah Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la that he will choose the best for you. After completing the dua stand and greet your Fellows Muslims and family members in the mosque. This is where your Eid Salah ends.
The Day of Festivities
Well, as now you know about the authentic steps for how to perform eid prayer, let's talk about the delights of Eid. Eid ul Fitr is a Day of Joy and Togetherness among Muslims. Families visit each other after the Eid Salah and gather together. They cook food and organize Eid parties for their family and friends as they celebrate Eid Day. Eid-ul-Fitr is considered to be the favorite Eid for the children as they get Eidi (A small token of love in the form of money or gifts) from their elders. People also buy new clothes and shoes for themselves and their children for the Eidain
But, in all this joy we must never forget the poor people. We must pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr to the deserving people on this pious day either in the form of money or food so that they don't feel left out. This money is given to the poor so that they don't have to worry about earning money on Eid Day. If you can afford it, also gift some dresses and shoes to them to wear on Eid. If Allah has blessed us so much, we must also care about the poor and serve His Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la"s mankind when in need. May Allah Subhaana Hu Wa Taa'la lead us to the right path always Ameen.
