Salat ul Tauba

The word Tauba means " to return". In Islam, Tauba is an act of seeking forgiveness from Allah Almighty for our mistakes and sins and returning to the right path. Salat ul Tauba or prayer for forgiveness is a nafal prayer in Islam that is completed by performing 2 Rakats with one Salam. You can perform Salat ul Tauba any time besides forbidden hours. Upon realizing your sins you can ask Allah for forgiveness by performing Salat ul Tauba.

Narrated Abu Bakar Siddique(R.A) Abu Dawood Hadith # 1521

Muhammad (S.A.W) says, “There is no one who commits a sin then purifies himself well and stands and prays two Rakat, then asks Allaah for forgiveness, but Allaah will forgive him. Then he recited this verse: ‘

"And those who, when they have committed Faahishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allaah and ask forgiveness for their sins; — and none can forgive sins but Allaah — and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know’ (Surah Al-Imran verse# 135)

Narrated Abu Musa Sahih Muslim Hadith# 6989

Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) said, " Allah the exalted and Glorious, stretches out His hand during the night so that the people repent for the fault committed from dawn till dusk and He stretches out His hands during the day so that the people may repent for the fault committed from dusk to dawn. (He would accept repentance) before the sunrise in the west( before the day of Resurrection).

Step by Step performing Salat ul Tauba

Step 1 Clean Yourself by Making Wudu

Before performing namaz clean yourself by making ablution. Ablution is mandatory for every Namaz whether it is nafal, sunnah or fard. Without doing Wudu prayer will be invalid. Then on the clean ground lay a prayer mat in the direction of Kaaba for starting the prayer.

Step 2 Niyyah for Salat ul Tauba

Stand straight on the prayer mat and then intend for 2 Rakats of Salat ul Tauba by saying" I intend to pray 2 Rakats Salat ul Tauba facing toward the Holy Kaaba, in the Presence of Allah Almighty.

Step 3 Say Takbir

Then standing straight take both your hands up to your ears while saying Takbir “الله أكبر”. As some steps are different for females while performing Namaz hence, they have to take their hands up to their shoulders.

Step 4 Perform Qayam

Then bring back your hands and tie them below your navel in a way that your right palm is above the back of your left hand. Females have to tie their hands on their chests. While staying in the Qayam position recite the following ayat and Surah.

  • Firstly recite Sana (سُبْـحانَكَ اللّهُـمَّ وَبِحَمْـدِكَ وَتَبارَكَ اسْمُـكَ وَتَعـالى جَـدُّكَ وَلا إِلهَ غَيْرُك)
  • Then recite Surah Fatiha while standing in the same position.
  • In the last of Qayam after reciting Surah Fatiha, recite Surah Ikhlas or any Surah from Quran.

Step 5 Perform Ruku

Then while saying “الله أكبر” bend down your upper body halfway towards the ground. Place both palms of your hands on both of your knees. Then recite Tasbeeh ( سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ) while staying in the Ruku position. You have to recite Tasbeeh a minimum of three times. However, for a longer Ruku, it is permissible to increase the recitation of Tasbeeh.

Step 6 Perform Qooma

Then slowly rise up your upper body. Then while rising up recite (سمع الله لمن حمده). And once you are in a standing position recite(رَبَّنـا لَكَ الحَمْـدُ) with both your hands straight along your body.

Step 7 Perform First Sajdah(Prostration)

Then bow down your head for the first prostratin on the ground while saying“الله أكبر”. In the meantime place your both palms straight on the ground. Also, place your nose and forehead on the ground for prostration. Then three times recite Tasbeeh(سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى)while in this position. You can increase the recitation of Tasbeeh for a longer prostration.

Step 8 Perform Jalsa

Then saying “الله أكبر” raise your head from the first sajdah. Then sit on the ground for a few seconds before performing the second sajdah.

Step 9Perform Second Sajdah in Salat ul Tauba

For the second prostration bow down your head and nose on the ground. Then again recite three times Tasbeeh (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) three times. Here the first Rakat of Salat ulTauba is completed.

Step 10Stand Up for Second Rakat

Then again saying “الله أكبر” stand up for performing the second and final Rakat. You have to repeat all steps in the same manner as done in the first Rakat.

  • Firstly perform Qayam in the second Rakat of Salat ul Tauba.
  • Then perform Ruku as earlier performed in the first Rakat.
  • Perform Qooma after getting up from Ruku.
  • Then perform the First prostration of the second Rakat.
  • Sit in the Jalsa position for some seconds before performing the second sajdah.
  • Perform the Second Sajdah.

Step 11 Perform Quood

After performing the second Sajdah, sit in the Jalsa position to perform Quood. Staying in the position with your palms straight on your thighs, recite At-tahiyat, after reciting At-tahiyat stay in the same position and recite Durood -e- Ibrahimi. Then recite (رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ). You can also recite other recommended supplications at the end of Quood after reciting Durood-e-Ibrahimi.

Step 12 Perform Tasleem

Then say Salam on both your right and left side. Firstly, turn your head towards your right shoulder and say (السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ). Then turn your head towards your left shoulder and again say ( السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ). Now 2 Rakats of Salat ul Tauba are completed.

Step 13Ask For Forgiveness and Recite Supplication

Now make supplication at the end of the prayer. Praise Allah Almighty and then send Durood on His beloved Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). Ask Allah to forgive your sins and bless you with guidance. There are supplications that can be recited for repentance you can recite (اللْهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي) or any other dua for repentance.

Conclusion

Allah is most Merciful. He forgives His servents when His servant asks for forgiveness. But still, there are some conditions that are considered mandatory for acceptance for Tauba. You have to feel bad for your wrong deeds, you have to be firm about not doing wrong again. Tauba is not about doing wrong deeds in hope of Tauba but it is about realizing your mistakes and returning to Allah Almighty.
