According to the Islamic calendar on the 10th of Dhul Muslims celebrate Eid Ul Adha, one day after Hajj. As the Islamic calendar is according to lunar dates, therefore, the date may vary from region to region. Eid ul Adha is the second Eid that is celebrated after Eid ul Fitr. Muslims celebrate Eid ul Adha in the remembrance of Hazrat Ibrahim(A.S) when he was about to sacrifice His son Hazrat Ismail (A.S) for the sake of Allah Almighty, but meanwhile, Allah replaces Hazrat Ismail(A.S) with a sheep. On Eid ul Adha Muslims pray Namaz and then sacrifice an animal for the sake of Allah and repeats the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim(A.S). Let’s go through a step-by-step guide on how to pray Eid ul Adha prayer.
Eid Ul Adha Prayer
Eid ul Adha prayer is prayed in the congregation behind Imam. It is a two Rakat prayer with one salam and six Takbeerat. The time for Eid ul Adha prayer begins 15 minutes after sunrise and lasts until noon. Eid Prayer has no Adan(prayer call) and no Iqama.
Eid Ul Adha Prayer in Quran
Surah Hajj Verse# 36
And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.
Surah Hajj Verse # 37
Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and give good tidings to the doers of good.
Eid Ul Adha Prayer in Hadith
Narrated Al-Bara Sahih Bukhari Hadith # 951
I heard the Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivering a Khutba saying, "The first thing to be done on this day (first day of Eid ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions)."

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) used to Nahr or slaughter sacrifices at the Musalla (on Eid-ul-Adha).
Step By Step Performing Eid Ul Adha Prayer
Step 1 Perform Ablution / Wudu
Wudu is mandatory for every prayer as well as for eid prayer. However, before heading towards Mosque there are the following Sunnah actions that are recommended to perform:
- Take a shower and wear the finest clothes for Eid prayer.
- Perfume yourself and then comb your hair well.
- Eat something sweet, it's Sunnah to eat odd numbers of dates before heading towards the mosque.
- Then head towards Mosque, while saying Takbeer e Tashriq اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ. وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ
Step 2 Make Intention for Eid Ul Adha Prayer
Stand straight behind Imam in a row with both your arms straight along your body. Then make Niyyah slowly by saying" I intend to pray 2 Rakats of Eid ul Adha Prayer, facing towards the Kaaba, in the presence of Allah Almighty".

Step 3 Say Takbeer
You have to follow Imam in every step and don't perform any step until Imam performs that step. When Imam takes both hands up to his ears while reciting الله أكبر, you have to perform it with Imam. Take your both hands up to your ears while saying الله أكبر.

Step 4 Recite Sana
After reciting Takbeer take both hands back and tie them below your navel in a way that your right hand should be over your left hand. Then recite the opening dua (سُبْـحانَكَ اللّهُـمَّ وَبِحَمْـدِكَ وَتَبارَكَ اسْمُـكَ وَتَعـالى جَـدُّكَ وَلا إِلهَ غَيْرُك).

Step 5 Perform Additional Takbeerat
Now you have to perform additional Takbeerat behind the Imam. You have to say Takbeer three times in the first Rakat. Take your hands up to your ears while saying الله أكبر then bring them back straight along with your body. Again say Takbeer while raising your hands up to your ears and again perform these furthermore one time.

Step 6 Perform Qayam
Now you have to tie your hands below your navel to perform Qayam. Standing in Qayam's position repeat reciting Surah Fatiha and another Surah from Quran behind the Imam.

Step 7 Perform Ruku
Now when the Imam bends down for Ruku while saying الله أكبر, You have to follow him in the same way while saying الله أكبر. Make sure your upper body is bent in a way that your face is towards the ground and your both pams should be on your knees. Staying in this position recite Tasbeeh ( سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ). You have to recite it a minimum of three times.

Step 8 Perform Qooma
When Imam raises from Ruku while reciting(سمع الله لمن حمده). You also have to raise up from Ruku and then while in a standing position you have to recite (رَبَّنـا لَكَ الحَمْـدُ).

Step 9 Perform First Prostration of Eid ul Adha Prayer
When the Imam says الله أكبر, and bow down for Sajdah. You also have to repeat the same by saying الله أكبر and bow down. Bow down your head on the ground in a way that your nose touches the ground and your Palms should be straight on the ground. Then staying in this position repeat reciting Tasbeeh (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) behind the Imam. You have to recite Tasbeeh a minimum of three times.

Step 10 Perform Jalsa
Raise your head from the ground saying “الله أكبر”. Then sit on the ground for a few seconds before performing the second sajdah.

Step 11 Perform Second Prostration
Again bow down for prostration in the same way you had done in the first prostration. Then you have to repeat reciting Tasbeeh (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) behind the Imam.

Step 12 Stand up to perform Second Rakat
Now, while saying “الله أكبر”, stand up for a second Rakat then Imam shall firstly, recite Surah Al Fatiha and then another Surah, thereafter, before Ruku, you will have to perform three Takbeerat in the same way as done in the first Rakat. Then you have to bend down for Ruku, raise up from Ruku for performing Qoooma, bow down for First Sajdah and after performing the first Sajdah, you have to sit for a few seconds on the ground in a Jalsa position. Finally, perform the Second Sajdah.
Step 13Perform Tasleem
Then you have to sit on the ground by placing both of your palms straight on your thighs. Then you have to recite At-tahiyat, after reciting At-tahiyat sitting in the same position recite Durood -e- Ibrahimi. then end Quood by reciting (رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ) .
Step 14 Perform Ruku
End your Eid ul Adha prayer by saying, Salam. First, turn your head towards your right shoulder and say (السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ). Then turn your head towards your left shoulder and again say ( السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ).
Conclusion
Once you had performed the Eid ul Adha prayer, remain in your place for attending the Khutba(sermon). It is recommended to listen to the sermon attentively without making any disturbance. After the sermon, start your dua by praising Allah Almighty and sending Durood on Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W). Then greet others in the Mosque by shaking hands and hugging them. You can recite تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنَّا وَمِنكُم( May Allah accept [good deeds] from you and us) while greeting others.
