Maghrib Prayer

Maghrib prayer is the first prayer of the day according to Islamic day. However, it is the fourth prayer according to the conventional day that is prayed after asr and before Isha prayer. The time for maghrib prayer begins after the sunset and ends upon the disappearance of twilight. Maghrib prayer has 3 Fard Rakats along with 2 Sunnah and 2 Nafal Rakats.

So exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning.

Maghrib Prayer in Hadith

Narrated Rafi' bin Khadij Sahih Bukhari Hadith # 559

We used to offer the Maghrib prayer with the Prophet and after finishing the prayer one of us may go away and could still see as Par as the spots where one's arrow might reach when shot by a bow.

The Prophet prayed seven Rakat together and eight Rakat together.

Step by Step Performing Maghrib Prayer

When the time of maghrib approaches, clean yourself by making Wudu, then on the clean ground facing toward the Kaaba lay the prayer mat. And then start your maghrib prayer. firstly, you have to perform 3 Rakat Fard, then 2 Rakat Sunnah, and in the last 2 Rakat Nafal.

Step 1 Make intention for 3 Rakat Fard

Start your prayer by making an intention for 3 Fard rakats of Maghrib prayer by saying" I intend to pray 3 Fard Rakats of Maghrib prayer, facing towards the Holy Kaaba, in the presence of Allah Almighty". You can make an intention in your local language.

Step 2 Say Takbeer

Take your both hands up to your ears while saying “الله أكبر”. Taking hands up to their ears is for men while women have to take their hands up to their shoulders while saying Takbir.

Step 3 Perform Qayam

Then tie both of your hands below your navel in a way that your right hand should be above your left hand. Females have to tie their hands on their chests.

  • Then staying in the same position recite Sana (سُبْـحانَكَ اللّهُـمَّ وَبِحَمْـدِكَ وَتَبارَكَ اسْمُـكَ وَتَعـالى جَـدُّكَ وَلا إِلهَ غَيْرُك)
  • Once after reciting Sana, recite Surah Fatiha.
  • Then recite Surah Ikhlas or any other Surah from the Quran that you remember.

Step 4 Perform Ruku

While saying “الله أكبر” bend down your body so that your face is towards the ground. Then place both palms on both of your knees and recite Tasbeeh ( سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ) while staying in this position. You can recite Tasbeeh a minimum of three times. However, for a longer Ruku in the prayer, you can increase the Tasbeeh.

Step 5 Perform Qooma

Then rise up your body and while rising up recite سمع الله لمن حمده. And once you are in a standing position recite رَبَّنـا لَكَ الحَمْـدُ.

Step 6 Perform First Sajdah

Bow down your head on the ground while saying“الله أكبر”. In the meantime place both the palms straight on the ground. Your nose and forehead should be n the ground. Then recite Tasbeeh(سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) three times in this position. However, you can increase the recitation of Tasbeeh for a longer Sajdah.

Step 7 Perform Jalsa

Then while saying “الله أكبر” raise your head from the sajdah. Then sit on the ground before performing the second sajdah of First Rakat. Remember you have to sit in Jalsa for some seconds.

Step 8 Perform Second Sajdah

Now, again bow down your head on the ground for performing the second sajdah. And recite Tasbeeh (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) three times. Now the first Rakat is completed here.

Step 9 Stand Up for Second Rakat

While saying “الله أكبر” stand up for performing the second Fard Rakat.

  • Firstly perform Qayam by reciting Surah Fatiha and Surah Ikhlas.
  • Then perform Ruku and recite Tasbeeh.
  • Now, Perform Qooma in the second Rakat.
  • Then perform the First Sajdah and recite Tasbeeh.
  • Sit in Jalsa for some seconds before bowing for the second sajdah.
  • Finally, Perform the Second Sajdah.
  • Raise your head from the ground and sit in a jalsa position to Perform the First Qaada by reciting At-tahiyat.

Step 10 Stand Up for Third Rakat

After completing the second Rakat, stand up again saying “الله أكبر” to perform the third Fard Rakat of Maghrib prayer.

  • Then perform Qayam.
  • After Qayam Make Ruku and recite Tasbeeh.
  • Then perform Qooma.
  • Now bow down to perform the First Sajdah.
  • Then sit on the ground in the Jalsa position.
  • Then perform the second Sajdah.

Step 11Perform Quood

Now you have to perform Quood in the final Fard Rakat. Sit on the ground and then put both of your palms straight on your thighs. Now recite At-tahiyat, after reciting At-tahiyat sitting in the same position then recite Durood -e- Ibrahimi. Then in the end of Quood recite رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَّفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ. There are other recommended supplications that can be recited after Durood.

Step 12 Perform Tasleem

Now by offering Salam on both your right and left side finish Fard Rakats of Maghrib. Turn your head towards your right shoulder and say السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ. Then turn your head towards your left shoulder and again say السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ. The three compulsory Rakats of Maghrib prayer are completed here.

Step 13 Make intention for 2 Rakat Sunnah

After performing three Rakats Fard. Make niyyah perform two Rakats Sunnah of Maghrib prayer. Stand straight on the prayer mat with your arms straight along your body to make Niyyah. By saying ” I intend to pray 2 Rakats Sunnah of Maghrib prayer, facing towards Kaaba, in the presence of Allah”.

After making niyyah for Sunnah Rakats, say Takbir and start your first Sunnah Rakat .

  • Then perform Qayam and recite Surah Fatiha and Surah Ikhlas.
  • After performing Qayam make Ruku.
  • Then make Qooma.
  • After performing Qooma bend down to perform the First Sajdah and recite Tasbeeh.
  • Then sit in Jalsa before the second sajdah.
  • Perform Second Sajdah to complete the first Sunnah Rakat.

Then Stand up to Perform the second Sunnah Rakat.

  • Make Qayam in the second Rakat.
  • Then perform Ruku.
  • Perform Qooma after rising from Ruku.
  • Then perform First Sajdah.
  • Perform Jalsa before performing the second sajdah.
  • Then perform Second Sajdah.
  • Sit in Quood and recite At-tahiyat, Durood -e-Ibrahimi and Dua.
  • Then end your prayer by performing Tasleem to complete the second Sunnah Rakat of Maghrib prayer.

Step 14Make intention for 2 Rakat Nafal

Then make niyyah for performing two Rakats Nafal of Maghrib prayer. By saying ” I intend to pray 2 Rakats Nafal of Maghrib prayer, facing towards Kaaba, in the presence of Allah”.

After making niyyah for Nafal Rakats, say Takbir and start the firstRakat of Nafal .

  • Start by performing Qayam.
  • Then after performing Qayam make Ruku.
  • Then perform Qooma.
  • After performing Qooma bend down to perform the First Sajdah.
  • Then sit in the Jalsa position before performing the second sajdah.
  • Perform Second Sajdah to complete the first Rakat.

Then Stand up to Perform the second Nafal Rakat.

  • Make Qayam in the second Nafal Rakat.
  • Then perform Ruku and recite Tasbeeh.
  • Perform Qooma after rising from Ruku.
  • Then perform First Sajdah.
  • Perform Jalsa before performing the second sajdah.
  • Then perform Second Sajdah.
  • Sit in Quood and recite At-tahiyat, Durood -e-Ibrahimi and Dua.
  • Then end your prayer by performing Tasleem to complete the Nafal Rakats of Maghrib prayer.

Conclusion

As the time period for maghrib prayer is shorter than other prayers it is recommended to pray maghrib in the early hours without delay. 3 fard Rakats of maghrib are mandatory to pray missing these will be considered a sin. However, missing nafal rakats will not cunt as a sin.
